The discussion in the Introduction renders it unnecessary to speak here of the view of inspi ration taken in this work: suffice it to say that while the Bible is regarded as the word of God in the truest meaning of that phrase, it is yet written by men; and to ascertain its meaning the ordinary laws of interpretation must be re garded. At the same time, while the historico grammatical method must be everywhere em ployed to ascertain the sense of Scripture, it must be used in constant remembrance that the Holy Spirit is the ultimate Author of the Scrip ture teaching, and in view of the great object for which that teaching has been made known to men.

In presenting this work to the public, a few introductory and explanatory remarks seem necessary.
The book was prepared several years ago, and laid aside in the abundance of other occupation. It had been the intention of the author to take it up afresh, and to rewrite it wholly. He had, in fact, made all preparations for so doing last summer, just before his unlooked for and lamented death. He had gone over the manuscript, had made some changes, and had indicated the places where other alterations were desirable.
In the places thus indicated the editor has felt at liberty to modify the text, following as a guide a course of lectures upon the interpretation of the New Testament which were delivered by Dr. Gardiner, at Newton Theological Institute, in 1884.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores principles for interpreting the Old and New Testaments as a cohesive whole, reflecting the same divine authorship. The author argues that while the Bible is inspired by God, its human writers have contributed to its unique character. The book examines how theologies in different historical periods have approached issues such as the coexistence of a perfect God and human error in Scripture, ultimately concluding that this stems from divine adaptation to the readers' limitations. Through detailed examination of specific biblical texts, the author argues that certain seeming incongruities in the Bible are resolved by understanding the biblical authors' human context and limitations. The book thus explores the complex relationship between the divine and human aspects of Scripture and its profound implications for our understanding of God and our faith.
