The casual remark of a friend long experienced in the business of education that a want was felt in schools of some set of lessons proper to succeed the spelling books, first drew the attention of the author to the object of the following work.
It appeared to her almost self-evident, that for the use of pupils of that tender age, pieces written expressly must possess many advantages over the most judicious selections from the works of standard writers, who composed without the purpose of adapting either their style or their reflections to the capacity of childhood.
