Sinopsis

This book explores the nature of the Christian Church, and Justice. The author argues that Christianity provides the best framework to face and deal with social and scientific developments. The industrial revolution and the rise of democracy have shifted societal structures, and the Church should, and can, play an essential role in ensuring improved conditions for the most vulnerable. However, the book notes that there is a competing narrative, the theory of evolution, which suggests that social improvements will occur naturally through the survival of the fittest. The book promotes the Christian perspective that all people are made in the image of God, entitled to dignity and care. Through the teachings of Christ and the idea of a Divine kingdom, the book suggests that self-sacrifice and social responsibility are not products of instinct but are inspired by God, helping humanity reach its full potential.

Reseña del editor

Excerpt from Order and Growth: As Involved in the Spiritual Constitution of Human Society

This book consists in the main of the Hulsean Lectures delivered at Cambridge in the year 1890.

If it has the good fortune to prove itself helpful to any readers, it will be, I believe, through the account which it gives of the nature of the Church, and of Justice. The ideas which I have endeavoured to expound on these subjects do not claim to be original, but they are not so familiar to Christians in general as - if I am right - they ought to be. And there must be many whom the current descriptions both of the Church and of Justice entirely fail to satisfy.
