Discover the lore and language of the Basque people through collected legends and poetry.
This edition surveys Basque myths, tales, and songs gathered largely from rural communities, preserving a window into a living tradition. It frames how language, memory, and imagination shape these stories, from nature allegories to village dramas, and shows how modern readers can read them with fresh eyes.
The book balances introduction, notes, and text, guiding readers from the study of comparative mythology to the firsthand voices of Basque storytellers. You’ll find discussions of how legends travel, change, and endure, along with examples that illuminate Basque culture, belief, and daily life. The collection also includes Basque poetry and a selection of songs, highlighting the rhythm and flavor of the tradition."Sinopsis" puede pertenecer a otra edición de este libro.

Jr Not that we suppose all these tales to be atmospheric myths; we adopt this only as the provisional hypothesis which appears at present to cover the largest amount of facts. It seems certainly to be a vera causa in some cases but still it is only one of several possible verae causae, and is not to be applied to all.

The study of the recent science of Comparative Mythology is one of the most popular and attractive of minor scientific pursuits. It deals with a subject-matter which has interested most of us at one period of our lives, and turns the delight of our childhood into a charm and recreation for maturer age. Nor is it without more useful lessons. In it we see more clearly than perhaps elsewhere the reciprocal influence, which none can wholly escape, of words and language upon thought, and again of thought and fancy upon words and language; how mere words and syllables may modify both conception and belief; how the metaphor, which at first presented an object more clearly and vividly to the mind than any more direct form of speech could do, soon confuses and at last wholly distorts the original idea, and buries its meaning under a new and foreign superstructure.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of Basque folklore, specifically focusing on the legend of the Tartaro, a monstrous one-eyed giant. The author, through detailed analysis, reveals how this figure, often portrayed as a cannibalistic shepherd, reflects a deeper connection to ancient sun mythology. The Tartaro, who is consistently outwitted and defeated by seemingly foolish human characters, resonates with familiar archetypes from Western literary tradition, such as the Cyclops of the Odyssey. The book explores various themes including the power of wit over brute strength, the importance of cleverness and resilience in overcoming obstacles, and the persistence of ancient beliefs in a changing world. The author delves into the intricacies of the Basque language, tracing the origins of the Tartaro legend and its evolution over time. The book's captivating storytelling and insightful analysis provide readers with a unique understanding of the Basque cultural identity and the enduring nature of folklore.
