This book contends that although Peter was considered among the most significant Apostles, there is little evidence to indicate he ever visited the city of Rome. In fact, scholars from many backgrounds agree that there is no Scriptural evidence to support his presence there. The author presents arguments from various scholars, including many Roman Catholics, to show that not only is there no proof that Peter was ever in Rome, but that the idea that he was the Bishop of Rome is likewise highly doubtful. The book carefully examines the language of all early writers whose works that mention Peter, including forged testimonies that Roman Catholic writers have themselves confessed to be untrue. The author goes on to provide an extensive review of Protestant and Catholic viewpoints on the subject, maintaining that the entire fabric of the Roman Catholic Church rests on this questionable assumption. Ultimately, this book argues that there is no proof to validate the Roman claim of Peter's visit to and residence in Rome, and that the entire structure of the Roman Catholic Church therefore crumbles without this essential tenet.

Excerpt from Was the Apostle Peter Ever at Rome?: A Critical Examination of the Evidence and Arguments Presented on Both Sides of the Question
There has not been given much attention by the good people of the United States to the arguments by which the doctrines and practices of the Church of Rome have been assailed from the one side and defended from the other. The reasons for this are not discreditable to a young Nation busily engaged in shaping its own life, and satisfied that religious convictions are a man's own affair and need not be discussed by his neighbors. There is, however, an increasing attention being given to History, and the element of Religion cannot be ruled out of historical investigation.
It is, moreover, being shown to thoughtful students of the questions of the day, that there are such religious convictions as do affect others than those who hold them, and that they become a factor in social and political life. We rejoice in freedom, but we must scrutinize forces, even though religious, that appear to be opposed to accepted ideas of human freedom.

Excerpt from Was the Apostle Peter Ever at Rome?: A Critical Examination of the Evidence and Arguments Presented on Both Sides of the Question
"For though you believe all the Scripture, yet if you believe not that Peter was at Rome, you know who will tell you, you had as good believe nothing." - Dr. John Lightfoot.
"The great fact of the Roman Church is founded solely on the coining of St. Peter to Rome. This fact would be absurd, it would be inexplicable, it would be madness, if it be not admitted that St. Peter came to Rome to preach. It is by the coming of St. Peter, that the Roman Church exists." - Father Geini, Dies, at Rome, 1872.
"We cannot find fault with a Protestant, when relying on the proofs which the oldest Fathers, Clement of Rome and Justin, present, he holds the abode of Peter at Rome, and all connected with It, for a tale derived from the Apocrypha." - Ellennorf. Roman Catholic Professor, Berlin.
"St. Peter the good, honest, married Apostle of Babylon, and the East, who left as the last legacy to his followers, not to make themselves 'lords over God's heritage.'" - Edinburgh Review July, 1803.
