Excerpt from Florida Historical Pageant: Official Program
Community Service is now entering its second year of activities in Jacksonville. During this period its pur pose has been to develop a greater community spirit by means of a greater community interest. In its efforts to bring about this result, it has encouraged self-expres sion in the individual, developed leadership and found talent of which we little knew.
At present Community Service is composed of eight Community Leagues and the three larger branches known as Community Players, Community Music Association and Community Pageant Association. The latter is the new est of the three and through it from year to year it is hoped that it may be a means to further manifest our community spirit and communicate to the world our love for Florida.
To those who have contributed to the success of Community Service, may this foreword convey a message of sincere appreciation.

This book presents the historical pageant play performed in Jacksonville in 1923 to celebrate Florida's history from the arrival of Ponce de Leon in 1513 to Florida's entry into the United States as the 27th state in 1845. The pageant comprises eight episodes performed by a cast of several hundred people, including a chorus and an orchestra. The play includes dialogue, historical tableaux, music, singing, dance, and battle reenactments. The author provides an introduction, interludes, prologues, and historical notes. The play was an ambitious undertaking for its time and remains a valuable historical document. It portrays the complex history of Florida, including the interactions between Native Americans, Spanish explorers, French colonists, British settlers, and American pioneers. The book also includes insights into the cultural and social life of Florida during these periods.
