September 6th, I attended the great Thurman1 mass meeting in Madison Square Garden. The ball, which then occupied the entire space between Madison and Fourth Avenues, and Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Streets, was densely packed, thousands had to stand, and there were great overflow meetings outside. It was a hot night. I sat on the platform between ex-governor Hill and Hon. Abram S. Hewitt. Thurman was ill and unable to speak more than a few words. Hill made an able speech. There were then calls for Mr. Hewitt and for me. Governor Flower, the chairman, came and said we must speak. Hewitt said he was unable to speak. I spoke for about ten minutes, having to yell at the top of my voice. When I left the rostrum, I was about as wet as if I had been overboard.
