A fine undulating park stretched away up to the woods, which formed its bound ary on two sides of the domain. On the third lay a broken woodland country, while the fourth looked over a cultivated flat, terminating in the large alluvial track of reclaimed fen, bright on this April morning, of which I am writing, with the fresh green corn crops of that stiff clay country.

On the borders of that broad belt of woodland, which separates the fens from the words Lincolnshire stood "St. Helens," the country seat of the De Dribys. It was a queer, rambling old house, of what can only be described as the composite style of architecture. The Elizabethan, with its sharp gables and mullion windows, perhaps predominated; but the old house had been added to so often by the whilom regnant, De Driby, as to have quite lost its original characteristics.
