A magnificent and eloquent letter of Thomas Jefferson (No. 88) on the evils of Slavery, and in which he prophesies the Civil War "as a leaf of our history not yet turned over," is well worth attention; as is a fine letter of the pioneer and Indian fighter, Daniel Boone (No. 17); Benjamin Franklin on his mission to England in 1762 (No. 55); John C. Calhoun on the Annexation of Texas (No. 27); a War Letter of Abraham Lincoln, 1861, in which he says he "hates to reject any offer from what is called a Southern State" (No. 104); and many others of equally great intrinsic value, including the Governors of New York, the Mayors of New York City, manuscripts of Joseph Rodman Drake, Jas.
