I was the only man in Oxford to help him - I, a Roman Catholic and an outsider! I was never more astonished in my life. I said to him: In what sense can I possibly hope to be of service to you? You know my theological position as a Catholic, and you reject it. You reject it because you do not grant my premises. And, outside the Catholic posi tion, I can see no other logical and consistent system of Christian thought - none where reason is freely exercised, and the permanent claims of human nature are considered. My mind was made up on that point years ago. So why come to me? Why not consult some of the learned authorities of the university?

But he did not seem to see the matter from this point of View. He persisted in saying that the time and thought which I had given to the study of this, the most interesting of all subjects, qualified me to be of special help to him. The very fact, he said, that you are a Catholic, and that your judgment is not hampered by those innumerable con siderations which custom and association are so apt to call into play with most of us, makes it possible for you to help me to clear my mind. You have studied the history of Protestantism, and the Angli can system, have written several things on the subject, and your own clearly-defined position enables you to speak freely. In fact, I would much rather talk to you than to any of these fellows here in Oxford.
