He had also a taste and capacity for historical inves tigation which, with his charming English style, would have enabled him to gain great distinction in that de partment of literature if he could have devoted his life to it. The papers upon that class of subjects inserted here are the work of hours spared from the engrossing employments of his profession. But they will amply vindicate this statement.

Excerpt from A Collection of Historical: And Other Papers
This book contains a few examples of the work of a faithful busy, and useful life. Dr. Reynolds was first of all, and above all, a Christian minister. He was a man to whose intellectual and moral nature faith, and not scepticism, was congenial. He accepted without misgiving the religious belief known as Unitarianism, substantially as it was held and preached by William Ellery Channing and his contemporaries. But he respected the understanding and liberty of thought of other men. He had a large tolerance. He had also a genial and affectionate nature, which led him to form hearty friendships with men whom he accounted worthy, according to his somewhat severe standard of personal excellence, without regard to differences of belief. So he had the kindliest personal relations with the representatives of other denominations. He cared little for discussing questions about which Christians differ, although he was fully equipped for such discussions when his duty seemed to him to require them. But he stated with great power and with great beauty the arguments which lie at the foundation of the Christian faith, and at the foundation of good morals and purity and uprightness in personal conduct.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles The Siege and Evacuation of Boston, an event of considerable historical import. By 1775, there was wide discontent with the British Navigation Lawsâ stranglehold on commerce in colonies led by merchants, men of property, and a population steeped in the political philosophy of the Puritans. When the British responded to this unrest with The Boston Port Bill, which decimated their economy, a wave of sympathy surged across the American Colonies. Neighboring towns and even far-flung, loosely connected settlements sent an outpouring of food, money, and supplies to their beleaguered brothers. The author argues, New England became the heart of the Revolution because this colonial backwater was already ideologically prepared for a struggle to preserve legal rights against overreaching executive power, and because the response to their suffering forged a bond of sympathy and necessity between the disparate colonies. They understood that the siege of Boston was, in fact, a siege of American Liberty itself. While the outcome of the military conflict was far from certain, this act of solidarity and the courage of the militia who held out against the British ensured that the question of American independence was not a matter of if but when.
