Excerpt from Samples of Common Sense: In Verse

Doctor Johnson, who was accounted a great critic in his day, said, "To commence author is to claim praise, and no man can justly aspire to honour but at the hazard of disgrace." The writer of the following rhymes is not particularly sensitive on the points stated though he wishes to stand well with the public, yet he does not apprehend that his simple thoughts and homely expressions will call forth much criticism of an adverse kind. Most people may be inclined to look with leniency or the efforts of a man of limited education. On the other point mentioned, that of praise, he will be "contented with little, and canty with mair," if he get it; and even should judicious readers think his productions nor entitled to much commendation, he will acquiesce in their judgment.
