Sinopsis

Discover Kingston-upon-Hull through its changing tides and key stories. This concise volume surveys Hull’s geography, its vital Humber estuary, and how the town grew from a market town into a busy port. It weaves together population trends, urban development, and meaningful local landmarks to show how Hull shaped and was shaped by England’s coastal trade.

Hull’s history is explored through its streets, churches, institutions, and the people who built and used them. The narrative connects the town’s daily life with broader events in English history, from early chapels and markets to the impact of long ships, railways, and industrial progress.

  • How Hull sits at the Humber estuary and why the river matters to its economy.

  • Key moments in the town’s development, governance, and architecture.

  • Demographic changes and the evolution of local institutions through the centuries.

  • Snapshots of notable sites, from churches to docks and public works.

Ideal for readers of local history, maritime heritage, and anyone curious about how a port town grew alongside the nation’s history.

Excerpt from General and Concise, History and Description of the Town and Port of Kingston-Upon-Hull

During the last quarter of the eighteenth century two Histories of Hull, in thick quarto volumes, by George Hadley, Esq., and the Rev. John Tickell, respectively, were published. Since the opening of the present century, the Town has been not only almost rebuilt, but it has been much more than doubled in size; and, notwithstanding this, I have ventured upon writing a history of the place - a condensed one of necessity - in a small volume of about 700 pages. How I have succeeded, my readers must determine. The narrow limits of the work obliged me to relinquish the higher functions of the historian, and to content myself with the simple part of the careful chronicler, recording little more than dry details of events of a remarkable character, and the facts connected with the origin and present state of the Town and its public institutions. For this reason I have seldom given expression to any opinion of my own.

The imperative necessity of accuracy, and the great labour and time involved in preparing the work for the press, has rendered its production somewhat tardy; but my Subscribers have been gainers by this, for the delay has afforded time to verify the correctness of almost every statement.
