Excerpt from Three Years on the Kansas Border
While the following pages were going through the press, sedate old friends remarked to me, that the subject of which I treat, is too grave to admit of the levity which is often displayed in the narrative. The only reply which I can make to this is, that my book is a record of facts. The style is my own, the material was furnished on the Border. The scenes through which I passed were, in some respects, supremely ridiculous, and must be laughable; there were others which were inhuman, and must therefore excite horror. To write of events in any other manner than that in which they occurred, would not be a true history.
If the reader will be watchful, he will discover, that in those chapters which will perhaps be regarded by him as the most humorous, Miss Pussy is let out of her confinement!

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is a captivating and firsthand account of the struggles of a missionary in the turbulent early days of the Kansas Territory during America's mid-19th-century period of westward expansion. As the author worked to establish religious outposts on the frontier, he was caught between pro-slavery and Free State factions on the eve of the Civil War, and was forced to navigate deadly conflict, political intrigue, and the inherent prejudices of the time and place. From abolitionist preachers to partisans on horseback, this book provides a rare glimpse into a crucial period of American history and bears witness to the role that religion, politics, and morality played in shaping the destiny of the nation. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in American history, religion, or the antebellum era.
