Excerpt from Confession and Absolution: An Investigation of the Teaching of the Bible and Prayer Book
Mr. Gerry had made a collection of nearly all the books, large and small, on this subject, which had been published of late years in the Anglican Communion, and we went over them together. Some were excellent from the historical and theo logical standpoint, but too exclusively dogmatic. Others, again, took a line so apologetic (in the common sense of the term) as to render them quite useless for the purpose we had in view, namely, to provide a Manual which could be placed in the hands of lay people desirous of informing them selves in regard to the doctrine and practice of Confession in our Church.

Excerpt from Confession and Absolution: An Investigation of the Teaching of the Bible and Prayer Book
Last summer a well-known layman of New York, the Hon. Elbridge T. Gerry, who happened to have read a sermon of mine on Absolution, urged me to work out its argument more fully than the limits of a sermon allowed, and to add to it answers to some of the objections commonly brought against Confession and Absolution. This little book is the outcome of his request.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the profound subject of forgiveness and reveals the spiritual practice of Confession and Absolution as illuminated by the teachings of the Bible and the Prayer Book. The author argues that forgiveness operates only if there is the potential for the recipient to appropriately receive and utilize the gift, which is something that can only occur in the presence of true penitence. The book emphasizes that the act of forgiveness is not unconditional, and that the practice of Confession enables a state of grace which can facilitate the reception of God's forgiveness. Recognizing the prevalence of erroneous views on forgiveness, the author challenges common misconceptions about sin and encourages the reader to seek the help of the Holy Spirit to truly understand the malice of sin. The book provides compelling biblical evidence to support Confession, including the power and authority bestowed upon the apostles by Christ in the Gospel of John. By examining the nature of forgiveness, the meaning of sin, and the provision made in the sacraments for the administration of forgiveness, this book offers a compelling argument for Confession and its profound role in the Christian life.
