Sinopsis

Explore the history, law, and meaning of church dedication from ancient times to early modern practice.

This study illuminates how sacred spaces were conceived, blessed, and used in Christian worship, and why dedication matters for churches and their communities.

The book surveys a long tradition of how churches are set apart for divine use, the role of bishops and canon law, and the evolving responsibilities around consecration. It also delves into debates over reconsecration, the authority behind rites, and the interplay between liturgy, architecture, and ecclesiastical governance.

  • Learn how dedication rituals and terminology developed across centuries
  • See how canon law shaped when and how a church could be consecrated or reconsecrated
  • Encounter historical examples and discussions from English and continental sources
  • Understand practical implications for building, maintaining, and using sacred spaces

Ideal for readers of church history, canon law, and the history of religious practice.

Excerpt from The Object, Importance, and Antiquity of the Rite of Consecration of Churches

The favour so kindly shewn by the Public to the Author's "Brief Notes on the Church of Scotland" has emboldened him to lay before the same indulgent tribunal the following Treatise on the Object, Importance, and Antiquity of the Rite of Consecration of Churches. He trusts that the present volume will not fall short of its predecessor in the peculiar advantage of combining diligence in making research with strict accuracy in giving quotations. In short, he hopes that it will fulfil the promise held out in the title-page. In regard to different classes of readers, he ventures to think that it may not prove without its use. Not that he presumes to offer any fresh information to those who are already well conversant with this subject, and whom he begs favourably to receive this work, only as a small token of his earnest desire to promote a feeling among us of increasing reverence towards "the House of Prayer."
