Littré defines it as Panier d'osier plus long que large, Oil l'on met le linge, la vaisselle. In old French the word is found as mande. Littré gives the etymology as follows Wallon monte picard et Hainaut made; has-lat. Manda; du germanique anc. Haut-allem. Manne anglo-sax.
