Excerpt from The Republic of Costa Rica
The task of translating any work, however interesting the original, must always be found more or less tedious. Just when the pen would run on most steadily, and when the brain is most absorbed with the subject, one is apt to arrive at some expression, the rendering of which into another and perhaps less graceful language, without reducing it to bald ugliness, is so difficult as to tempt one to forego it.
Senor Calvo's book is, however, a work so rich in information, so admirably compact, and withal so well adapted to supply practical knowledge, that I have found little to abridge or dispense with. It is a book for all who would know something of Costa Rica; for the capitalist or speculator interested in mining, manufacturing, or agricultural enterprises; for the less fortunate who seek to build themselves up fortunes remote from the pitiless pressure and selfishness of great Northern cities; for the traveler who would view new sights; the pleasure seeker tired of beaten tracks; the sportsman wishing to surprise himself and his friends, and for the invalid whose days are shadowed by merciless disease.

Its author, Joaquin Bernardo Calvo, was a Costa Rican politician and diplomat who had access to official documents and other sources of information. The book is divided into three parts: - Part one of this book provides a detailed overview of Costa Rica's geography, climate, and natural resources. It includes information on the country's rivers, lakes, mountains, and forests, as well as its mineral wealth and agricultural potential. - Part two is devoted to the history of Costa Rica. It begins with the pre-Columbian era and continues through the colonial period and the country's independence from Spain in 1821. This section also covers the political and economic development of Costa Rica in the 19th century. - Part three is concerned with Costa Rica's people and culture. It describes the country's population, education system, and economy. It also provides information on Costa Rican customs, traditions, and folklore. The author includes information from the time of the book's publication, not the present day. Throughout the book, the author emphasizes the progress that Costa Rica had made since its independence, and he expresses optimism for the country's future.
