Excerpt from First Lessons in English Grammar and Composition
The object of this little book is to lead pupils by easy steps to a careful, correct, and ready use of English. There are many technicalities in English that need to be taught to children early, — before incorrect or careless habits are formed. How to do this systematically and at the same time simply, has been the import ant problem for teachers to solve. The outcry a few years ago against the mechanical teaching of English grammar did some harm, because it was taken up by the thoughtless and directed against the subject instead of against the books and methods. At that time came a loud call for language lessons. This call also was taken up by those ever ready to get on the popular side, and we had such a ?ood of language lessons, language books, and language teaching as was never before seen.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a fresh and engaging approach to the teaching of English grammar. The author presents a compelling argument against the prevailing trend of avoiding technicalities in language education, which was prevalent in the late 19th century. The author contends that children can readily grasp and appreciate the technicalities of their language, just as they learn other subjects. The book emphasizes the importance of a systematic and engaging approach to teaching grammar, arguing that ignoring these fundamentals can lead to careless and incorrect language use. The author's approach emphasizes a focus on real-world applications, incorporating technicalities into the student's written and spoken language from the very beginning. The book guides teachers in helping children understand the fundamental concepts of grammar, such as sentence structure, punctuation, and the parts of speech, and it emphasizes the importance of incorporating grammar into reading, writing, and other subjects. By engaging with the technicalities of language, this book empowers students to develop a deeper understanding of the English language and to express themselves more effectively.
