In the 21st chapter of his Poetic Aristotle defines metaphor as "the transference of a word to a sense different from its proper signification." Four kinds of metaphors are distinguished by him, namely, those in which the transference is made (1) from the genus to the species, (2) from the species to the genus, (3) from species to species, and (4) according to the analogous (Katà tò àvaλoyov). So far as the first three kinds are concerned the classification is sufficiently simple. The nature of the last is not so clear.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book, an essay on metaphor, provides an in-depth exploration of its usage in poetry. The author draws on literary history to trace the evolution of metaphorical language, examining the theories of renowned philosophers such as Aristotle and Quintilian. It argues that metaphor is essential to poetry, as it allows poets to express complex emotions and ideas with remarkable clarity and depth. Through close analysis of examples from classical and modern poets like Shakespeare, Coleridge, and Tennyson, the book reveals how metaphors create vivid imagery, evoke powerful emotions, and enhance the reader's understanding of the world. By examining the role of metaphor in some of literature's most celebrated works, this book sheds light on the transformative power of language and its ability to transcend the boundaries of literal meaning.
