Excerpt from Watching and Waiting on the Border
"Was it really hot down there?"
"Did you like it?"
"What are Mexicans like?"
"What about army life?"
In writing this story of my experiences at the Mexican border, I have tried to answer such questions as the above - questions which people have asked me daily since my return. The average person has read in the newspapers that it was very hot in Texas, that the National Guard could whip its weight in wildcats (according to officers of the Guard), and that as a fighting organization, it is in a class with the Boy Scouts (according to some army officers). He believes that the Mexican is a bloodthirsty animal which inhabits the wilderness beyond the Rio Grande, and he has the conviction that fifty thousand Americans could clean up that country in a month.
