This book is an anecdotal look into the life of Barney Branagan, an Irishman plagued with paradoxical fortune. The author recounts Branagan's attempts at various trades and his enthusiastic if not profitless exploits, set against a backdrop of 19th-century Ireland. This book provides a singular view of bygone life in Ireland, with insights into the attitudes and language of the time. It underscores how the human spirit can triumph over misfortune, and how optimism can be its own reward.

Excerpt from The Fawn of Spring-Vale, Vol. 3 of 3: The Clarionet, and Other Tales; The Misfortunes of Barney Branagan, Resurrections of Barney Bradley
Barney Branagan, one of the luckiest men that ever was persecuted by misfortune, was the son of a wealthy farmer, who, to his agricultural, or we should rather say, his pastoral pursuits, added the mellow business of a butter merchant. The latter had been baptized Barney also, for which reason, his son was generally addressed and spoken of as Barney Beg, or little Barney, a mode of distinction rendered necessary in Ireland, where so many persons of the same clan or family receive the same name.
