Excerpt from The Problem of the Old Testament: Considered With Reference to Recent Criticism
The thanks of the author are due, in the first place, to the Trustees of Lake Forest College, and to the ad judicators acting on their behalf, who, in their generosity, have awarded to this book the munificent prize at their dis posal from the Bross Fund. It is right, however, to say, that, although the present volume has been so fortunate as to obtain the Bross Prize, it was not for the Bross Prize, or with thought or knowledge of the same, that the book was written. But for a long-standing promise to the English publishers, it is doubtful if it ever would have been written at all. The book was sent to press in the beginning of this year, and the delay in its publication has been due principally to the afterthought of submitting it in proof to the judgment of the Bross Prize arbiters. The author is deeply sensible of the courtesy of the publishers in so readily meeting his Wishes in this matter at inconvenience to themselves.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the captivating world of the Old Testament, examining its historical accuracy and the validity of modern critical interpretations. The author challenges the prevailing theories of higher criticism, which often seek to demystify the supernatural aspects of Israelite religion and view the Old Testament through a purely naturalistic lens. The book explores the unique characteristics of Israelite religion, highlighting its monotheism, focus on grace, and strong connection between faith and morality. The author emphasizes the internal coherence of the Old Testament, arguing for its organic unity and teleological nature, where history unfolds in accordance with a divine purpose. The author further investigates the origins and development of Israelite institutions, such as the Ark of the Covenant, the Tabernacle, and the priesthood, meticulously examining the evidence for their early existence. The book delves into the complexities of the critical theory of documents, questioning the validity of separating the Old Testament into distinct sources (J, E, D, and P) and challenging the assumptions behind their proposed dating. Finally, the author explores the impact of archaeological discoveries on our understanding of the Old Testament, highlighting the potential for archaeological evidence to either corroborate or challenge critical theories. This book offers a compelling and thought-provoking defense of the Old Testament's historical and theological integrity, providing a fresh perspective on the enduring relevance of its message for faith and life.
