Excerpt from The Border or Riding Clan: Followed by a History of the Clan Dickson and a Brief Account of the Family of the Author
The border clans have usually been considered as little better than common thieves, none apparently reflecting that the actual state of both England and Scotland was with brief exemptions one of chronic petty warfare, nor upon the general state Of society in those days when the Bible and other books were almost unknown, for the first printing press in Lon don was only set up in 1476, and printing was not introduced into Scotland until 1501.

Excerpt from The Border or Riding Clan: Followed by a History of the Clan Dickson and a Brief Account of the Family of the Author
By the word "clans" is generally if not almost universally understood those of the Scottish Highlands, few being aware how important a part our clans played during the Middle Ages, and I trust, therefore, this little treatise concerning the Border, Riding or Foraying clans, Dalesmen, Marchmen or Borderers, as they were variously styled, may not prove uninteresting, as they have too long been viewed through nineteenth century spectacles, and have, moreover, been generally confounded with the Batablers or Baitablers, as the English called them, or freebooters of the Debateable Lands, whose hands were against every man and every mans hands were against them. These frontier rievers, who in Scottish legal documents were generally called bordour men or broken men, acquired also about the time of James the First (1406-1437) the name of Mosstroopers, from their living in the mosses of the country.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating history of the Border clans of Scotland, those families who lived in the tumultuous borderlands between England and Scotland during the Middle Ages. The author goes beyond the typical understanding of clans, which often focuses solely on those of the Scottish Highlands, to explore the distinct culture and influence of these "Marchmen" who were renowned for their fierce independence and constant skirmishes. The book sets the stage by outlining the turbulent social and political landscape of the time, highlighting the feudal systemââ â¢s imperfect hold on these regions and the prevalence of chronic petty warfare. The author paints a vivid picture of life on the border, showcasing the clansââ ⢠unique legal system, their reliance on raiding and the role they played in defending their homeland from both English and internal threats. The book then explores the stark contrast between the violence of their lives and the relatively undeveloped state of education in the period. Despite the lack of widespread literacy, the author demonstrates the strength of the clansââ ⢠cultural identity through their distinctive mottoes, war cries, and methods of conflict resolution. By contrasting the Border clans with their counterparts in other European countries, the author reveals how widespread such forms of raiding and conflict were in that era. This book offers readers a unique and insightful look into a largely overlooked chapter of Scottish history, revealing the complex and multifaceted lives of the Border clans and challenging the traditional portrayal of them as mere thieves.
