Sinopsis

A quiet train ride with a lively group of children becomes the start of a warm, watching summer.

Amid talk, games, and the pull of a mischievous bulldog, a quiet boy named Grif finds his own inside world and his place among new grown-up worries. The journey deepens into a slice of rural life, where adults juggle care, curiosity, and a dash of danger that brings everyone closer.

  • Follow the dynamics between Miss Johnson, Aunt Caroline, and the children as they travel and settle into a summer routine.
  • Experience the tension, humor, and small discoveries that reshape Grif’s view of strength, belonging, and family.
  • See how a playful dog and a sudden incident pull the story toward memory, courage, and healing.
  • Enjoy a portrait of seaside and rural scenes that frame a child’s coming-of-age in a distinctly classic voice.
Ideal for readers who appreciate quiet, character-driven stories about childhood, family, and the small mysteries of everyday life.

Aunt Caroline still watched the retreating figure. Bouncer was very naughty, she murmured absently.

Excerpt from The Spring Song

'So fair a summer look for never more.' - Thomas Nashe.

Leaning back against the leather cushion of the railway-carriage, Griffith Weston was conscious of an endless panorama of fields and meadows, of green hedges and white hawthorn, and blazing, yellow furze. The whole landscape was bathed in a crude glare of June sunlight, and the heat, and the vivid glittering light, and the rushing train, made his head ache.

He wore a light, loose, flannel suit, without a waistcoat, and his wide short trousers left his knees bare. A dark olive-green silk tie brought out unnecessarily the sallowness of his complexion; his straw hat lay on the seat beside him. He was not in the least a handsome boy, but his expression was pleasing.
