Sinopsis

Excerpt from A Defense of Poetry: Edited With Introduction and Notes

Is Shelley's imagery splendid? If not splendid, it is at least generally beautiful, and bears an obvious resemblance to that of his poetry. Many of his illustrations are drawn from light, fire, the wind, music, birds, and flowers. It would be an agreeable and instructive task to make a collection of his metaphorical phrases, to trace his indebtedness to the Bible and other classics, and to spell out the character of his genius in the light of his similes, but we cannot afford our selves the indulgence in this place.

The author himself has thus enunciated two criteria which may be applied to the prose written by a poet or in a poetic mood.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This seminal 19th century essay by English Romantic poet Percy Shelley posits poetry as the greatest of educators and the progenitor of all disciplines, ranking above both history and philosophy. Like a mirror reflecting "life expressed in its eternal truth," poetry reveals the harmonious eternal truths of existence more purely than do other mediums, offering readers a glimpse of the ideal forms on which all reality is patterned. Shelley believed that even unmeasured language could reflect this truth, and thus argued against strict adherence to traditional poetic forms. Rather than diminishing the poet's role, the use of rhyme, meter, and other formal devices allowed the musical qualities of language to work in harmony with its meaning, further enhancing the reader's experience and perception of the truth. While a poet's words may be clothed in the fashions and social mores of their time, the essential beauty and wisdom within shine through, offering timeless guidance and inspiration to those who seek it.
