Excerpt from Were You Ever a Child
When a fire-torn structure is about to fall in ruins, and some one says to the crowd, Look! That crack in the wall is getting wider! The beams on this side are all burned away, and it will fall in a minute. Stand clear! His remarks might perhaps be termed a criticism of an old insti tution. And similarly, when some one says, Get off the track! That's the new fast mail tooting down there, just around the bend! She goes ninety miles an hour and doesn't stop till she gets to New York! It is in a sense a plea in behalf of a new movement. In that sense, the following pages are a criticism of the existing school system, and a plea for the New Education.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book examines why our educational models need to change to meet the demands of the 21st century. The author first examines the four key components of traditional schooling - children, textbooks, teachers and buildings - and argues that, in their present form, they are unfit for purpose. The author discusses the damage done to children's self-belief and motivation by traditional teaching methods, the irrelevance and inaccessibility of textbooks, the narrowness of teachers' expertise, and the fundamentally inappropriate nature of school buildings. The author then goes on to advocate for a complete rethink of educational priorities, with a focus on learning through play, access to real-world skills, environments that foster creativity and exploration, and an end to rote learning. This book is a radical and insightful critique of modern education that offers a fresh perspective on the future of learning.
