Discover the early steps of America’s woolen industry and how homegrown craft shaped a nation’s economy. This volume traces the move from imported fabric to domestic production, highlighting early legislation, pioneering mills, and the people who built a domestic woolen industry from the ground up.
From protective measures that encouraged local manufacturing to the emergence of the first woolen factories, the book weaves together historical moments, first-hand accounts, and the technology that transformed spinning and weaving. Readers gain a clear view of how wool and cotton goods shifted from reliance on Europe to becoming a cornerstone of American industry.
Ideal for readers of American industrial history and those curious about the roots of U.S. manufacturing.

In January, 1871, upon the request of the "Rhode Island Society for the Encouragement of Domestic Industry," I prepared a paper upon the "Introduction of the Woolen Manufacture into the United States," which was published in the transactions of the Society for 1870.
The origin of this request was the following letter from Hon. Horace Capron, then Secretary of Agriculture, Washington, D. C., to a member of the Society, viz.:

"Hon. James DeW. Perry, Bristol, R. I.
