I have been induced, my dear reader, to prepare this little work on the Choice of a State of Life, by an earnest desire to give you a faithful guide through the darkness that surrounds you in this world. And this desire is the more ardent, because those that choose well are often led to heaven, whilst such as make a bad choice, are generally lost for all eternity.
For a time I hesitated to present you with this little volume, lest you might imagine that I wished to draw you to the religious state. But the extreme need in which young persons stand of help and advice, and their inclination to decide without reflection, have caused me to disregard that objection: and I declare, my dear child, that it is the same to me, whether you become a religious, or lead a life in the world. My only desire is, that you should lead a holy life, and die a happy death.
