Excerpt from The Dramatic Unities
As the Italian scholars became more intimately acquainted with the works of the ancients, they began to feel the influence of their taste, and to imbibe some portion of their spirit. No longer satisfied with the humble and laborious task of translating these authors, they, with a laudable simulation, endeavoured to rival the boasted remains of ancient genius by productions of a similar kind in their native tongue... The person who is entitled to the chief credit of having formed, and in some degree executed, this design, is the learned Gian Giorgio Trissino. - (Chap, xvi.)
Of Trissino himself, Sismondi says -
"Born at Vicenza in 1478 of an illustrious family, he was equally qualified by his education for letters and for public business. He came to Rome when he was twenty-four years of age, and had resided there a considerable time, when Pope Leo X., struck by his talents, sent him as ambassador to the Emperor Maximilian.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the history of dramatic unitiesâ"the classical principles of time, place, and action. The concept originated with Gian Giorgio Trissino, who sought to mirror Greek play structures and elevate Italian drama. The author explores how these rules took hold in France and became strictly enforced, leading to a narrow interpretation of Aristotle's Poetics. Through insightful analysis, the book examines how playwrights like Corneille and Voltaire grappled with the constraints of unities, often sacrificing realism for adherence to the rules. It also sheds light on the eventual rejection of unities in the 19th century, which allowed for greater freedom and depth in dramatic expression. By tracing the evolution of dramatic unities, the author provides valuable insights into the history of theater and the ongoing debate between artistic freedom and adherence to established norms.
