Sinopsis

Excerpt from Expiation

Any one could guess from the voice that he who spoke was not a Southerner. It was a very pleas ant voice, however, with nice modulations, and when the lantern rays swerved at a stumble of the horse, they showed a slender, well-knit figure, and a delicate, bright young face, with gentle brown eyes, and not enough down on the upper lip or cheek to hide a mobile mouth and rounded chin altogether a handsome young fellow. Tiny wrinkles at the corners of the eyelids and a dimple in the cheek hinted that this was also a young fellow who laughed easily. He was laughing now, swinging the lantern above his mud-splashed legs.

This book, set in Civil War-era Arkansas, follows Fairfax Rutherford, a young man who travels to his father's plantation following the death of his brothers. Along the way, he encounters survivors of the conflict, including a woman who enlists his help in delivering her murdered husband to his family. His journey takes him through a landscape of loss and violence, where he must confront both the legacy of the war and his own family's troubled past. Through its vivid characters and evocative depiction of a society in flux, the book explores themes of guilt, the weight of family secrets, and the search for redemption in a world forever changed by war.
