Sinopsis

Excerpt from The Servant of the Lord

The four lectures contained in this volume were originally delivered as one course of the lectures arranged for the Clergy in Cambridge in the Long Vacation of 1909. The subject itself needs no apology, for few will deny that those passages of the book of Isaiah which treat of The Servant of the Lord are among the most important of the Old Testament Scriptures. Not only is our whole conception of prophecy generally affected by the interpretation of these passages which we may adopt; our view of the Atonement largely depends upon the sense which we assign to the words: He was wounded for our transgressions.' It is therefore of extreme importance that we should endeavour to discover the meaning which these passages would naturally bear in the age in which they were composed; in other words, that we should study them in the light of the history of the Church of Israel. This, however, is a by no means easy task. It requires no.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a comprehensive and nuanced exegesis of several Old Testament passages commonly referred to as the 'Servant Songs'. The author, an experienced biblical scholar, combines meticulous philological analysis with historical and literary contextualization, shedding new light on the figure of the Servant of the Lord. The book examines how these passages have been understood and applied throughout history, particularly in relation to Christ. It shows how a close reading of the original Hebrew text reveals the Servant of the Lord as a complex and multifaceted figure, embodying both Israel as a nation and a specific individual who suffers and is vindicated. By exploring the historical context of the Servant Songs, the author demonstrates that they were likely composed during periods of national crisis and societal upheaval. This insight enriches our understanding of the Servant's role as a symbol of hope and redemption in the face of adversity. Overall, this scholarly yet accessible book provides a fresh and thought-provoking interpretation of the Servant of the Lord passages, offering valuable insights into the depth and complexity of the Old Testament's messianic vision. It is a significant contribution to the field of biblical scholarship and will be of great interest to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the Hebrew Bible and its relevance for Christian faith.
