This book examines the 150 psalms comprising the first book of the Old Testament. An enduring legacy from the Jewish faith, the psalms have profoundly impacted Christian worship and literature for 2,000 years and remain a crucial resource for contemporary spiritual life. For the author, the psalms exemplify a literary and spiritual tradition spanning multiple historical and cultural contexts. The author's analysis reveals the influence of ancient Hebrew poetry on the creation of the psalms, exploring concepts of parallelism, inversion, and metaphor. Moreover, this book considers how the Christian appropriation of the psalms has produced additional layers of meaning, resulting in a rich tapestry of interpretation and use throughout the ages.

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study and Use of the Psalms, Vol. 1
To those who read the psalms in their original language I must explain that I have throughout, even when referring to the Hebrew text, numbered the verses as in the English Biblical version. This was the only simple and consistent course to take. The constant use of a double set of figures would have been cum brous; the alternate resort to the English and Hebrew systems of numbering would have been a source of endless perplexity; and if either the one or the other were to be exclusively adopted, there could be no question to which of the two, in a work mainly ln tended for English readers, the preference must be given.

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study and Use of the Psalms, Vol. 1
The title of these volumes sufficiently describes the object which they have in view. It may be deemed by some that the matter contained in them occasionally disaccords with the title in partaking too much of the nature of a commentary. Yet on examination it will be found that in almost every instance my endeavour has been to point out the direction in which the path of interpretation lies, and to clear away the difficulties which screen it from view or impede progress along it, rather than to pursue the track throughout. This, it seemed to me, in regard both of the use of the psalms and of the study of the psalms, was the task principally needed. Continuous commentaries on the Book of Psalms, and even new complete translations of the Book of Psalms, we have, and are likely to have.
