Sinopsis

Excerpt from Social Classes: An Oration Delivered Before the General Union Philosophical Society of Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania

WE are gathered here from successive college classes, and years, and generations. The past and the future concentrate in this hour. The occasion awakens, at once, memory and hope. Some of you are about to exchange the retreats sacred to study for the jostling world; to step from the gymnasium into the arena. You are eagerly looking forward. Hope, that most skill ful artist of the ideal, composes a future for you more glowing than the figures of Titian, and sunnier than the landscapes of Claude. You fancy yourselves plumed to soar like the falcon when the leash is slipped. Heaven grant that you may realize your hopes if not the very matter of them, at least their equivalent!

But some of us indulge more pensive feelings.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a riveting exploration of the formation and enduring influence of social classes in society. The author's historical analysis traces the rise of middle classes from their origins in the breakdown of feudalism through their rise to prominence in modern times. The book delves into the complex interrelationship of these classes, examining how their interactions have shaped history, politics, and culture. The author argues that the growth of the middle class has been a key factor in the progress of civilization, leading to greater prosperity, education, and individual freedoms. The insightful narrative explores the concept of class beyond the typical distinctions based on wealth or education. Instead, the author challenges readers to consider the evolving nature of class structures and the ways in which they intersect with factors such as race and culture. The book concludes by emphasizing the ongoing significance of social classes in understanding the dynamics of modern society and highlighting the need for inclusive and equitable policies that address social inequalities. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
