Excerpt from The World's Rough Hand: Toil and Adventure at the Antipodes
I suppose at some remote period - too remote certainly for us to put our finger on it - a seafaring life was quite an ideal one, and the lot of a sailorman the jolliest of all. I say I suppose this, because in no other way can I account for the glowing pictures which have been painted of Jack by the nautical novelists and song-makers of this century. If my supposition is a wrong one, then it is evident that a good many persons have yet to learn that the mere fact of their having crossed the Atlantic in a floating hotel, or having taken a trip up the Thames in a penny steamer, does not qualify them to write truthfully about matters pertaining to salt water.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is an authentic portrayal of the harsh realities faced by sailors in the late 19th century. The author, a former sailor himself, offers a unique perspective on the grueling conditions, poor treatment, and isolation that characterized life at sea during this era. The narrative follows the author's journey as he joins a crew bound for Australia, enduring months of hard labor, inadequate food, and relentless storms. Along the way, he encounters a cast of unforgettable characters, each with their own story to tell. Through vivid prose and unflinching honesty, this book not only provides a historical account of seafaring but also delves into the human experience of hardship, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of those who dared to sail.
