Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This engaging work chronicles the growth of German literature from 1740 to 1786 against the backdrop of Frederick the Greatâs reign. At this time, literary and artistic matters were increasingly entangled with politics. Prominent poets played a part in shaping the countryâs destiny, including Saxon poets unaffected by Frederickâs foreign influence, despite sharing his affinity for the French. During this period, the Leipzig German Society came into its own, with Gottsched as its leading figure. Gottsched promoted French Classicism in Germany and aimed to make Leipzig the literary hub of the country, qualities which attracted the attention of King Frederick. The author explores in detail the careers of Gottsched and his most famous rival, Gellert, whose fame rests on his poetic fables, tales, and religious odes and hymns. The book discusses the central themes and styles of Zacharia, Rabener, Elias Schlegel, and other notable Leipzig writers, and highlights the rise of the operetta there under the influence of Weisse and Hiller. The author traces the development of German literature and its leading exponents during this intellectually fertile period and emphasizes how the insights of that era continue to resonate in the present day. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Nº de ref. del artículo: 9781330921753_0
