Sinopsis

A clear, authoritative look at what the Bible says about the end times and the coming kingdom. This edition translates a key section of a systematic Christian-doctrine work, offering careful analysis of eschatology, Christ’s second coming, and the fate of humanity within God’s plan.

Grounded in Scripture, it surveys how early and modern thinkers have understood apostasy, the millennium, and the relationship between faith, history, and the world to come. The discussion stays focused on the framework of Christian hope, the role of the church, and the nature of the future resurrection and transformation.

  • Examines the tension between present Christian influence and anticipated future events.

  • Explains how the second coming relates to personal piety, baptism, and communion.

  • Considers the concept of paradise, Hades, and the souls of the departed in light of biblical teaching.

  • Offers a measured, dogmatically sober approach to controversial topics like the millennium and antichristian powers.

Ideal for readers of theology, church history, and religious philosophy, this edition provides a thoughtful path through complex questions about the future state.

I should be doing Dr. Dorner, however, an injustice should I publish as a tract for the times his chapter upon eschatology, without seeking through an introduction to put it in its own proper perspective and to indicate the general principles of Dorner's reasoning through which we Should approach this portion of his system. This seems all the more neces sary since American readers are perhaps too much inclined to go up to the master-works of German scholarship as some tourists enter a foreign gallery, note-book in hand, armed with certain stock questions, and then hurry away, imagining that they understand a great statue or painting. Dorner's reasonings are living outgrowths from his principles of faith, and his conclusions need to be apprehended and discussed not merely as so many logical quan.

The course of recent theological discussion has called general attention to Dorner's eschatology. To many these words designate some vague and portentous form of German speculation, which should be kept with all possible pain from corrupting the sources of New England theology. Men like the fervent Tholuck, the profound Müller, and learned Dorner, may be good enough Christians for Germany, but not for New England! Dorner's last great work, the ripe fruit of a ripe mind, may be profitable for the "state church" of Prussia, but it should hardly be tolerated in the free churches of America!
