Excerpt from A History of Modern Liberty, Vol. 1
It is, then, liberty, as exemplified in history, that will chiefly engage our attention. Moreover, as the subject of investigation is the history of modern liberty, our attention will be further restricted to the period denominated modern. I have, however, devoted a preliminary volume to the origins of liberty so restricted, and these origins I have sought in what have come to be known as the Middle Ages, from which the modern world directly emanated.

This book traces the evolution of liberty from the fall of the Roman Empire onward, beginning with its origins in the barbarian kingdoms that emerged from the shattered empire. Drawing from original sources and historical studies, the author shows how the rise of feudalism and the influence of the Church shaped the development of concepts surrounding individual and social liberties. Through an exploration of key events and figures, such as the role of the Italian city-states, the peasant revolts of Germany, and the intellectual and religious movements of the Reformation, the author illustrates the gradual expansion of rights that laid the groundwork for modern ideas of liberty. This book offers a comprehensive understanding of the origins and growth of liberty in Western and Central Europe, providing valuable insights into the historical foundations of our present-day freedoms.
