Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Spectrum Analysis
These investigations into the infinitely great, and infinitely small, will have for some minds the greatest attraction; others will, Sir William Huggins.perhaps, attach more importance to the utilitarian applications of spectrum analysis and the services it has rendered in the discovery of new elements, the certain detection of traces of rare substances in ordinary chemical analysis, and so on. In the present work, the Author has sought to explain principles and procedure from the very beginning, as well as to give an account of the refinements and achievements of this method of analysis, which have marked its latest developments. There is a very large amount of work waiting to be done, both by those who have the command of fine instruments and elaborate apparatus, and also by those who have only the simplest means, and it is hoped that to these last, especially, this book may prove a useful guide.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces a study of the significant scientific discovery of spectrum analysis. Before the invention of this method of analysis in 1860, it was impossible even to imagine that the composition of stars could be analysed. However, due to the application of this method, we now know that our sun and the distant stars are primarily composed of the same elements found on Earth. Furthermore, this discovery made it possible to deduce the presence of new elements, which were previously unknown to scientists. The author explores both the history of this important discovery and the principles and procedures involved in the study of spectrum analysis. From the very beginning of the book, the author explains the concepts of spectrum analysis through the use of simple and inexpensive methods. This makes the book accessible to both the curious and the serious scholar. This book is an excellent addition to the field of spectroscopy and will be of great interest to astronomers, chemists, physicists, and anyone else interested in the history of science.
