Excerpt from Bronson of the Rabble: A Novel
There was silence out on the Delaware; none of our modern blowing Of whistles or shriek of escaping steam. But all around the pair, as they made their cautious way, was the rattle and rumble Of trucks, hurried by stevedores from the warehouses to the ships.

Excerpt from Bronson of the Rabble: A Novel
One morning, a century ago, when James Madison was President of the United States, an old man, white-haired and blind, was led by a boy up the Mulberry slips from the Jersey ferry. There was silence out on the Delaware; none of our modem blowing of whistles or shriek of escaping steam. But all around the pair, as they made their cautious way, was the rattle and rumble of trucks, hurried by stevedores from the warehouses to the ships.
The elder stopped and sniffed the air.
"Smells like old times," he murmured, as the odors of tar, molasses, and dried fish quickened the nostrils. He turned his sightless eyes and pointed with a finger.
"Stephen Girard's place ought to lie that-a-way, a-facin' his wharves."
The boy looked and saw the large brick dwelling and counting-house of the famous merchant-mariner.
