This List has to do with books and articles on the formation and history of political parties in the United States, but not with those on the general political history of the nation, unless treating of party organization or party action.

While the list is not exhaustive, it includes, besides the better known writings, some others which are not yet essential to the special investigator.

Party proceedings, and, as a rule, biographical studies, are omitted, nor has an exhibit of source material been attempted, the purpose being rather to note the literature of parties as interpreted by their historians.
