Sherley High School grounds were full of a vivid red light. It spread through the trees, casting straight, black shadows from the trunks across the frost-browned turf and cinder walks. A huge pile of packing cases and barrels was burning, a constantly replenished mound of fire, setting a carmine reflection on the leaden clouds of a windless November night A din of staccato yells, wild, rollicking, roaring songs, shrill whistles and blaring horns was turning Sherley's usual peace and quiet of early evening into veritable pandemonium.
On the white-lined arena of Cantor Athletic Field that day eleven stalwart sons of S. H. S. had met and conquered, in battle royal of the pigskin, the sons of Des Plaines.
