Excerpt from University Addresses: Being Addresses on Subjects of Academic Study Delivered to the University of Glasgow
IN taking leave of you last session, I referred at some length to various incidents that had occurred in the course of the session, and to various changes, past and prospective, affecting the welfare and pro gress of the University: I shall defer any remarks of a similar kind that might now be made till a like period of the session comes round again, believ ing, as I do, that I can make a better use of the present opportunity of addressing you, by directing your attention to some object of a more general character, but which, from its relation to your studies, may be supposed to possess some interest for Univer sity men. If, in doing so, I trespass a little longer than some would like on your patience, I trust that.

Excerpt from University Addresses: Being Addresses on Subjects of Academic Study Delivered to the University of Glasgow
The Addresses printed in this volume are of two kinds. My brother, for a number of years, was in the habit of giving a lecture, at the beginning of each session, on some subject connected with the studies of the University, or on the work of some great author - philosopher or theologian, scientific or literary man - who might be regarded as a representative of one of these studies. He also, throughout his tenure of the office of Principal - except on one or two occasions when he was prevented by ill-health - delivered an Address to the graduates at the end of the Session after the Graduation Ceremonies, generally discussing some topic connected with University Education.
Of the former class of Addresses the most important, to the number of twelve, are included in this volume.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book from the late 1800s explores the common ground shared by different disciplines, such as science and art, presenting a vision of knowledge as a unified whole. The author argues that one cannot truly understand any particular subject without exploring how it relates to other fields of study. By showing how the sciences complement each other and revealing the interconnectedness of the social sciences and the more exact sciences, this book offers a comprehensive analysis of the nature of knowledge and the pursuit of truth.
