Sinopsis

A clear, readable exploration of what socialism means and how it seeks to expand liberty. This book presents the case for socialism as a way to reorganize economic life so that liberty is universal, not just for a few. It explains how private ownership of production can concentrate power and how collective control can broaden opportunities for all.

Using a broad historical and practical lens, the author describes the socialist movement, its methods, and its relationship to democracy and social reform. The text stresses that socialism aims to balance the needs of individuals with the demands of the whole community, while remaining rooted in the pursuit of human freedom.

  • What socialism is, and how it relates to liberty and social organization

  • Why private ownership of production can limit freedom and how collective control could change that

  • Different paths within the socialist movement, including parliamentary and reform approaches

Ideal for readers of political history and social theory seeking a foundational overview.

Reseña del editor

Excerpt from The Socialist Movement

One of the greatest of the difficulties which beset the path of the Socialist is the refusal on the part of his opponents to give an accu rate statement Oi what Socialism means and what the purpose of Socialism is. The main object of this book is to explain both. The Editors have asked a Conservative to explain Conservatism and a Liberal to interpret Liber alism, and have on the same principle turned to me to write about Socialism. It is, perhaps, best that doctrines which are the objects Of fierce assault should be explained by writers who believe in them, for, whether a doctrine is or is not to have a lasting influence depends not on the success with which clever critics attack some of its outworks, nor on the amount of error which creeps into its popular advocacy, but on the amount of truth which it really con tains, and that is more familiar to friend than to foe.
