§2. Nevertheless, although, as it is thought, the Omniscient God is with you and in you, and through Him you know all things, and not from man, nor yet by man, you were pleased, as you said, that my essay would be a solace to you, inasmuch as in the first place I should write to you a history of the fresh changes, which the world has produced, turning squares into circles, (more especially since your transmigration to the celled heaven, by means of which the world may appear more worthless to you, having its fickleness before your eyes,) and, secondly, that a well - known hand might recal to you the memory of one beloved.

The narrative begins with Richard's ascension to the throne in 1189 and follows his journey to the Holy Land on the Third Crusade. The author vividly depicts the challenges Richard faced, including raising funds for the crusade, quelling rebellions, and navigating complex relationships with other European rulers such as Philip II of France and Tancred, King of Sicily. The book delves into the power struggles, political intrigues, and military campaigns that shaped Richard's reign and the broader historical context of the crusades. Through the author's insightful observations, readers gain a deeper understanding of medieval society, the motivations of key figures, and the complexities of power and faith during this pivotal period. The book explores themes of ambition, loyalty, betrayal, and the enduring quest for both earthly and spiritual dominion.
