One of these papers was read to the Manchester Playgoers' Club, and afterwards printed in the "English Review." The rest, or the stuff they are made of, appeared in the "Manchester Guardian." I thank the owners for leave to reprint them. Each is formed by grouping into one loose whole several first-night notices of plays that led to kindred thoughts, or gave or withheld a similar quality of pleasure. They are, I confess, exhumed with misgiving.

He would be a bold reprinter of his own journalism who did not forestall his reviewers by asking himself the dread question. And yet for old theatre notices there may be a kind of excuse.
