Excerpt from Notes on Geological Map-Reading
(i) A geological map is an ordinary topographical map with additional indications (boundary-lines, colours, symbols) designed to show the geological constitution and structure of the country. The geological information so presented cannot be adequately realised without constant and instinctive reference to the form of the land - surface on which the various rocks are exposed. It is therefore of the first importance to be able to read a topographical map readily; 113. To interpret at a glance the general character and details of the surface-relief as there rendered. We shall accordingly begin with some remarks under this head.

Excerpt from Notes on Geological Map-Reading
Map-reading, to which the student of Geology should be introduced at an early stage of his training, lends itself, by the use of contoured geological maps, to methods of precision. These are here reduced to the simplest terms by the device of reckoning slopes and dips as gradients. Trigonometrical calculation is thus avoided, the protractor becomes unnecessary, and all questions are solved by the scale alone.
It will be understood that teaching is to be illustrated by examples, and these may be easily constructed on the lines of the following pages.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces the fundamental principles of geological map-reading to students as they advance from classroom theory into field practice. The author's approach is to minimize trigonometrical calculations, using a method of reckoning slopes and dips as gradients that can be directly measured from the map itself. Equipping readers with a portable scale and protractor, the book begins with an overview of topographical maps and how to read them to interpret land surface relief and slope. It then moves on to explore how to read geological maps, which reveal the distribution of various rock layers at the ground surface and how these layers fold and fault. The book includes many helpful diagrams and illustrations to support the text and aid the reader through concepts such as strike, dip, and outcrop, as well as practical advice on estimating the thickness of various formations and the throw of faults. Presented in clear and accessible language, this book is an essential companion for geology students in the early stages of encountering geological maps. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
