Sinopsis

Explore the rise of Raphael’s genius through the eyes of Marco Minghetti. This authoritative study traces the young master’s early days, his Peruginesque moments, and the artists who shaped his style in Florence, Perugia, Urbino, and beyond.

This edition gathers careful observations on Rafael’s progression from Timoteo and Perugino influences to the hints of a distinct, future mastery. It situates key works in context—from early drawings and predellas to major commissions—while grounding claims in period sources and critical appraisal. Readers will see how Minghetti pieces together journeys, patrons, and studio friendships to illuminate the making of a legendary painter.

- Learn how early drawings and paintings reveal a transition between schools and how Perugino’s influence blends with emerging personal style.
- Discover connections to major centers like Florence, Perugia, Siena, and Bologna, and how these places shaped Rafael’s path.
- Examine how critics and historians assess works, signatures, and attributions to establish dating and authorship.
- Understand the role of patrons, studios, and conversations between artists that guided Raphael’s development.

Ideal for readers who want a clear, measured view of Raphael’s apprenticeship years and the artists who helped sculpt his genius.

Excerpt from The Masters of Raffaello (Raphael Sanzio)

Raffaello so ardent a desire to behold the works thus commended, that, moved by the love he ever bore to excellence in art, and setting aside all thought of his own interest or inconvenience, he at once proceeded to Florence. These notes form the foundation upon which subsequent writers have, without due investigation, based their statements concerning Raffaello; modern critics have, how ever, deemed it their duty to examine their truth more narrowly. After reviewing with greater care the private sources of information, and bringing to light documents before unknown - and, what is especially important, adopting a more subtle and accurate method of observation than had been hitherto employed, assiduously comparing dates and facts in order to arrive at the distinctive characteristics of each artist, and so to determine their individual works and their peculiar merits modern criticism has been forced to the conclusion that the above quotations contain many and grave inaccuracies.

Excerpt from The Masters of Raffaello (Raphael Sanzio)

In Giorgio Vasari's Life of Raffaello occur these words: - "Giovanni began to instruct him in the first principles of painting, perceiving that he was much inclined to that art, and finding him to be endowed with a most admirable genius; few years had passed, therefore, before Raffaello, though still a child, became a valuable assistant to his father in the numerous works which the latter executed in the State of Urbino.
