Excerpt from The Nature and Genius of the German Language Displayed, in a More Extended Review of Its Grammatical Forms Than Is to Be Found in Any Grammar Extant

The importance of the German language is so generally acknowledged, that a more detailed view of its Nature and Genius than is to be found in the best Grammars used in this country, must, no doubt, prove acceptable to the English student. Indeed, the usefulness of the attempt, such as it is, can hardly be contested. Without venturing upon the barren field of metaphysical disquisitions, it enters sufficiently into the philosophical merits of the language to show its superiority over the mixed idioms of modem Europe; and the short pieces of poetry, and the numerous quotations of sentences in verse and prose, with which the work is interspersed, are calculated not only to afford a relief to the occasional dryness of grammatical tenets, but also to introduce the student gradually to the best German compositions, and to give him, as it were, a foretaste of that literature which has begun to excite the interest and curiosity of the learned of all nations.
