Practical, project‑based English instruction for junior high students. This guide presents a structured approach to teaching reading, writing, and oral expression through real classroom activities. It uses sample lesson plans and classroom roles to help teachers implement engaging, student‑centered projects.
The book outlines how to organize themed units, such as a postal service project and poem study, with clear time schedules, assignments, and group work. It emphasizes developing writing skills, memory strategies for poetry, and confident oral presentation, while connecting activities to broader language and literacy goals. Throughout, the focus remains on hands‑on practice, cooperative learning, and real‑world applications.

Excerpt from Supervised Study in English: For Junior High School Grades
This book is intended to illustrate a technic for the treatment of the English lesson in Junior High Schools where the lengthened period of sixty, seventy, or eighty minutes prevails. It is a sane conclusion that the work of the school should be confined to school hours. To use the evening hours of children for the preparation of lessons is to overemphasize the importance of "schooling" and to discount those equally educative influences which come from the social contacts of home, church, and community. Enriched courses of study demand the longer school day, but a due regard for the normal development of children demands that time allotments within the longer day shall be so carefully made, and efficient methods of study so commonly practiced, that the day's work can be effectively accomplished within the school. The margin between the hours of work and the hours of sleep is one rich in possibilities for the broad, well-rounded development of the individual. The school must undoubtedly assume responsibility for such "avocational guidance" as will lead to the worthy use of leisure time; but the mere assignment of tasks is an encroachment upon it which should be steadily resisted.
No attempt has been made in this book to outline a course of study in English although certain evaluating principles underlying the selection of topics for emphasis have been indicated.
